Most people who start martial arts don't make it to black belt level. No rank is given in our dojo (school), everything is earned. The length of time to test is different for each individual, based on effort, attitude, and ability. Earning a black belt (Shodan rank) is a testament to having a "never give up" attitude. Perseverance and mental toughness are some of the attributes learned in the journey to black belt.
